Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center Suspends Liver Transplant Program

Houston's Only Liver Transplant Program Closes

Patients in Need Sent to Other Hospitals

HOUSTON, Texas – Memorial Hermann Health System has voluntarily inactivated its liver transplant program at the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, the hospital announced Thursday.

The closure of the program, which was the only one in Houston, leaves patients in need of liver transplants with fewer options for care.

The decision to close the program was made after a review of the program's outcomes, which showed an increasing number of deaths among patients who had received transplants.

In a statement, Memorial Hermann said it "has been working closely with the Texas Department of Health and Human Services (DSHS) to ensure a smooth transition for patients in need of liver transplants."

The hospital said it will continue to provide care for patients who have already received liver transplants and will work with other hospitals in the region to identify suitable candidates for future transplants.

The closure of the liver transplant program is a major setback for Memorial Hermann, which has been a leader in the field of transplantation for many years.

The hospital's kidney transplant program, which is also located at the Texas Medical Center, remains open.
