Northern Lights Expected to Dazzle North America Again

After stunning displays in the UK on Friday night, the aurora borealis, or northern lights, are expected to dazzle skies over North America tonight and tomorrow night. A severe solar storm could even make the auroras visible as far south as North Carolina.
If you missed the northern lights in North Carolina last Friday, you may get another chance to see them this weekend. An unusual amount of solar flare activity means that the aurora borealis could be visible in the state again tonight and tomorrow night.
The aurora borealis is a natural light display that occurs when charged particles from the sun interact with the Earth's magnetic field. The particles are drawn to the magnetic poles, which is why the aurora is most often seen in the far north and south. However, during a severe solar storm, the aurora can be seen much further south.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a geomagnetic storm watch for tonight and tomorrow night. The watch means that there is a potential for a severe solar storm that could disrupt power grids and other infrastructure. However, the storm is also expected to create a spectacular display of the aurora borealis.
