What is the California Earthquake Warning System (CEWS)?

As part of the Governor's Office of Emergency Services, Cal OES runs the California Earthquake Warning System (CEWS), which uses ground motion sensors to detect earthquakes throughout the state.

On Monday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 hit near Highland Park. California's CEWS provided early warning.

How Can I Get Early Warnings?

To get early warnings, download apps like MyShake and QuakeAlertUSA or contact your local emergency management office.

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEAs) will also send alerts to your phone. You can enable these in your phone's settings.

What Should I Do When I Get an Alert?

When you get an alert:

  • Drop to the ground.
  • Take cover under a sturdy table or desk.
  • Hold on until the shaking stops.
