Yankees Make Roster Space For Anthony Rizzo And More Option 2 Youngsters To Triple A

Anthony Rizzo signs with the Yankees

Clearing roster space for new Yankee

Anthony Rizzo has signed with the New York Yankees, and the team has cleared roster space for him by optioning Miguel Andujar and Estevan Florial to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Andujar and Florial sent to minors to open roster spot for Rizzo

The Yankees designated Greg Allen for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster for Rizzo. Allen was hitting just .172 with a .247 on-base percentage and a .262 slugging percentage in 10 games for the Yankees this season, and he had been optioned to Triple-A on Saturday.

Andujar was hitting .286 with a .343 on-base percentage and a .443 slugging percentage in 10 games for the Yankees this season, and he had a homer and three RBIs in the series. Florial was hitting .250 with a .333 on-base percentage and a .313 slugging percentage in 10 games for the Yankees this season, and he had a double and two RBIs in the series.

The Yankees are expected to recall Andujar and Florial to the majors in the coming weeks, but for now, they'll report to Triple-A to get regular playing time.

Rizzo expected to bat cleanup for Yanks

Rizzo is expected to bat cleanup for the Yankees, though manager Aaron Boone hasn't fully committed to that spot just yet. He might bat fifth against right-handers and third against lefties.

Rizzo is an experienced hitter. He's a career .274 hitter with 231 home runs and 883 RBIs in 10 seasons with the Cubs, Padres and Yankees.

The Yankees are hoping that Rizzo can help them win their first World Series since 2009. They're currently 13-10 this season, and they're in first place in the AL East.
